En 1967, un jeune Américain bénéficiant d'un sursis pour cause d'études se retrouve à Montréal. Étudiant en médecine, talentueux joueur de hockey, il tombe amoureux d'une jeune Québécoise, Gabrielle. Un jour il se fait virer de l'école et est donc automatiquement appelé au Vietnam. Gabrielle, enceinte, le laisse partir car elle espère son retour. Elle apprend par la suite sa mort. Mais c'est une erreur. Quelques années plus tard, Matt réapparaîtra.
The year is 1967. The place, Montreal. Matt is an American student studying medecine at McGill, who meets and falls in love with an art student named Gabrielle. Matt is also a star hockey player, but he is expelled from school and no longer exempt from the draft. At this point in the story, Gabrielle has become pregnant, and Matt has to make the difficult decision of whether to stay or return home and enlist. Gabrielle encourages him to go, convinced he will return. But soon after he joins the army, she hears of his death in Viet Nam. It is only years later that this proves to have been a mistake.
